Folk Arts of Social Change Exhibition

The people united will never be defeated

Naming a position and acting on beliefs are continually necessary folk arts. Some people learn activism from family and neighbors. Others find their way through experiences that forever change the way the world looks. When people connect with one another, work collectively and cultivate a movement, they both draw on and create a storehouse of tools and techniques: the craft of social change. Leaders pass on their wisdom to successors, colleagues learn from one another, and children inherit a family tradition of political action. In this work there is creativity, analysis, doubt, conflict, drudgery, ethics, and values.

The signs, banners and puppets in this section represent the visible parts of collective efforts. The events at which they are carried require tremendous levels of coordinated planning and attention to thousands of details: What kind of event will be staged? Which words and images should be used? How to control the message to the media? What will draw a crowd? Both in planning and demonstrating, individuals can find space to craft their own position, and to contribute their personal style and vision to the larger effort.

These objects also represent some visible ways in which people risk serious personal and professional fallout for taking unpopular stands. Demonstrations, sit-ins, actions, die-ins, sick-outs and other interventions are among the ways like-minded people build community out of shared risk. Public events also balance the necessary but mundane behind-the-scenes work with liberatory moments of catharsis, humor, and celebration.

Tell us your stories, share your chants...

Chants are memorable, portable, and effective verbal art forms. People invariably recall what it felt like to hear tens, or tens of thousands of others shouting the same words together, or how what it felt like to throw out a phrase and hear it picked up by the crowd, or how different chants would alternate in a lively competition. At the original exhibition, we used re-recordable cards, so that exhibition visitors could add their chants. Send us your contribution: pfp@folkloreproject.org

What do we want? Freedom! When do we want it? Now!

Signs and slogans from anti-war demonstrations: a running list (2003-2004, 2007)

Duct tape demo signIn opposition to a war on Iraq, people have taken to the streets to voice their opinons. "This is what democracy looks like," says a popular chant. The following list documents signs and slogans used in demonstrations in January, February, and March 2003, March 2004, and January 2007: this is what democracy reads like! The list that follows (612 signs to date) is a sampling of these condensed, portable, repeatable, and community-making forms of verbal art. This collection catalogs peoples' wit, creativity, recycling of (and plays on) words; it also reflects the depth and breadth of opposition to current U.S. policy. The tenor and tone of demonstrations and vigils have also varied over these months (and years) and the slogans trace a range of emotions as well. We encourage you to send us your contribution: pfp@folkloreproject.org (While you are here, stay a bit, look around, and visit our 1999 "Folk Arts of Social Change" exhibition, which attended to how folk arts are tools in struggles for justice.)
